Day 7 refuge de Manganu to refuge de Petra-Piana

Saturday 23/06/07

Set off today at 5.53am as usual we started off with a very long never ending Ascent up to the highest point on the GR20, the Breche de Capitellu, at 2225mGR20 137.

It took us 2 hours of walking to reach this point and the views were magnificent, especially of the 2 beautiful lakes.

The path down to the Refuge was very steep and stony, full of alder scrub and wet under foot in places.

It was a difficult walking day again today involving a lot of climbing scrambling and bouldering.

I found it both mentally and physically very hard.. Geoff raced ahead of me all day today which did not help.

I have now been walking for 7 days the longest I have ever done in one stretch and over the most difficult terrain as well. GR20 148

Looking back we decided we should not have come down to the refuge but we should have carried on and done stage 8 today as well.

The refuge at Petra- Piana is a small one and sits on a small base held down with cables. It rocks if its windy…. which it did so I am told… people even screamed but I just carried on sleeping…

Wicken fen…..

Yesterday I spent a lovely day with fellow blogger Ellee…..

After setting her phone up so she can now twitter from her mobile and receivewalk 025

twitters to her mobile, we went off on a nice walk, round Wicken fen .

The weather was warm and windy making it a great day for a walk… I love walking in the wind it always makes you feel so fresh and alive….

I also logged her back into Flickr, face book, her stat counter and tried so hard to get her Google reader working but had no luck as we could not get the correct password…

I had a great day and hope next time I visit her she will let me practice my massage techniques out on her

Following Geoff (days 12/13/14)

Well Geoff got through the scary bit,”the awesome chemin De la Mature” is how he described it.He then carried on to walk a 17 mile day with 5000ft of ascent and 4000ft of descent, it was so cold at the top that he got his white fingers, but he soon warmed up when he reached Gabas.

The following day he had a vertical climb of nearly a mile not helped by the changing weather a mixture of sunshine and thunderstorms. After walking 16 miles he came to the refuge in Gourette.(which is a ski station)

This morning he left Gourette in awful weather conditions with poor visibility, I presume he is now at Arrens-Marsous.No News from him since this morning but I put that down to the bad weather conditions……Sure we will hear from him tomorrow.

Someone sent me a link today from the Times…. Pyrenees: walkers paradise  a must read…..

Its a Mystery…

I have started to think about my surprise holiday or should I say panic about my surprise holiday…

As far as I know we go away 2 weeks today, only a few days after Geoff gets home from the Pyrenees.

I dropped it into our conversation last night when he rang me…. all I got was pack light no more than 10kg ,wear walking kit and its high so could be cold…..

I have tried to get some information from Emily but she is not playing in fact this is what she had to say….

“Urm well…. I would be the biggest traitor ever if I told you, all I’ll say is you are going to LOVE it. I don’t like dad’s usual holiday activities but even I would DIE to go on this one it’s just stunning and breath taking and you’re going to have an amazing time :D”

Don’t know about you but I am going to burst with excitement soon…. not only am I excited about Geoff coming home but what a surprise I have to look forward to as well….

Any one like to take a guess at where I will be going and what I will be doing ???

Shouldham Warren

walk 019

Today I met up with the legstretcher  Group.

They are part of the Ramblers Association.

They meet up once a month and do a longer walk than normal Rambler groups, because of this it is usually a smaller group of walkers

Today 10 of us met up at Shouldham Warren car park for an 18 mile walk around that area.

It was a vwalk 022ery sunny warm day making it just perfect for walking by the river.

We did a stretch a long the Nar valley way that I had not done before and we stopped to eat our lunch outside the Ruins of Pentney Abbey.

A great day and many thanks to Mark for leading the walk.

Now I wont feel guilty when I eat the Apple and Blackberry crumble I just made

Before and after…

A day doing my outside DIY jobs , painting my newly erected fence panels

and giving my shed a lick of paint too. 012

Also went to the cinema with my son to see Disturbia, which was a thriller that we both enjoyed. Very disappointed that Atonement is still  not on in Kings Lynn,as I am desperate to see this film .We always seem to be so far behind everywhere else… another down side to living out in the country !!

Following Geoff (day 10/11)

Geoff arrived in Lescun in thick cloud too find everywhere shut till 5pm, but he then got a great veggie meal of egg and chips.Views above 1700m around Pic d’ Anie were stunning.

“Lescun is conveniently situated on the GR 10 long-distance footpath traversing the Pyrenees. Combined with the dramatic scenery of its mountain backdrop, this makes it a popular focus for walkers and climbers.

With its old buildings and narrow streets, Lescun exudes a pleasant old village charm.”

Geoff has now done 202km of the 427km he intends to do. To Banyuls would be 904km! ( so glad he’s not going that far as I am really missing him )

Tonight he is at Borce near Etsaut.Tomorrow he has the scary bit …..”The GR takes to the Chemin de la Mâture today. The year 1772 saw the completion of a sloping way cut into the rock face to bring suitable trees down through the Sescoué ravine for the French Navy. Today, part is still usable and the GR10 takes advantage of it. It is quite spectacular, easy to climb and only those who suffer from extreme vertigo would have problems.”

It looks like a ridge cut into the side of the mountain… another bit I would just love so hope Geoff takes lots of photos !!
