Herman number one

After looking after and feeding my Herman  for 9 days , I let 2 friends adopt some of him , I  then kept some for a Herman number two and finally I baked my Herman number one.

I was worried it may taste yeasty as my kitchen had smelt a bit like a winery while I was nurturing him !

I decided to stick with the basic recipe and added apple ,raisins, cinnamon and vanilla essence, along with the eggs sugar flour and oil.

I baked him in a tray bake which was a perfect choice and I had no problems with a soggy middle as reported by a few other people.

I sprinkled the top with brown sugar before baking but not the melted butter as I felt this was not really needed.

He baked really well and tasted totally delicious 🙂

I would like to keep him going until Geoff  returns from his long walk as I am sure he would love it and will need fattening up !

GEAR 10km Run 2012

5 weeks ago, after annoying an old achilles problem while out running, I really thought I would not be able to do the Gear 10km  run.

Waiting to start

I stopped running but carried on with my walking hoping that maybe this would keep me fit enough to run the 10km with no training.

My usual running distance is 4 miles, and last week I did a 4 mile run to see how I felt, the day after my achilles ached quite a bit and I was still unsure on what to do.

This morning I was up early rubbing Nurofen gel onto my achilles thinking I would just run it gentle and set a time for the next 10km.

It was perfect running conditions dry and cold 🙂

I expected a time of 66 mins (with training ) so imagine my delight when my actual time was 63 mins, and this was with no running for 4 weeks 🙂

My achilles did ache but never got any worse !

I believe 2000 runners took part, its a great flat course and the crowd really cheered you on, just a shame my photographer is away walking the south west coast path , so I have no photos of me coming across the finish line 🙁

The official results are out and I came 1112 out 2000 which I think is very respectable 🙂

Now its on to the next Challenge which is a 26 mile walk in 2 weeks time 🙂

and I will be looking for another 10km to do later in the year !

A Fine Day

With all the rain we have had over the past few weeks and last weeks walk being cancelled due to the rain, I was delighted to wake up to a dry windy morning here in Norfolk.

As I had arranged to go walking up the Norfolk Coast with my friend T.

T picked me up at 11 am and we headed off to Heacham, where the plan was to walk to Thornham along the Coastal pathÂ

We could not have picked a better day for it as I love coastal walking in the wind it makes me feel fresh and alive 🙂

We sat and ate our lunch in the sand dunes near old Hunstanton while watching all the Kite surfers enjoying the surf, which reminded me that Geoff would like a month out here to have another go at kite surfing.

I especially like the boardwalk through Holme Dunes, far too soon we reached the Lifeboat Inn in Thornham where we enjoyed a nice cup of tea before catching the coasthopper bus back to Hunstanton.

From Hunstanton we walked back to Heacham making it a very enjoyable 12 miles, with lots of girly chatter 🙂

Will I or wont I that is the question ??

Some weeks ago I entered the Gear run which takes place on May 6th 2012 in Kings Lynn.

Then shortly after that I annoyed an old  Achilles Tendon  injury 🙁 to say I was upset is an understatement !

Since then I have been resting it and stretching it, I even bought a foam roller to help massage my muscles.

All this time I have still been doing lots of walking trying to keep my fitness up, then I tried a mile run and it still hurt 🙁

Today was my make or break day when I tried out a 4 mile run.

I liked my new running shoes and used my heel shock absorber pads and although my Achilles ached slightly it never got any worse and I completed the run in 44 mins

I was very happy to see that I have lost none of my fitness and I feel like I just might be

able to do my Gear run with out making my Achilles worse.

I wont get  a P/B time but at least I will be able to enjoy the run and the atmosphere.

Now I just have to wait and see how it feels tomorrow, at the moment its not aching at all so its looking good 🙂

BUT I wont make a final decision till Sunday !

Introducing Herman !

Now I think a few people are going to be disappointed  because Herman is NOT a cat 🙁

Herman is The German Friendship Cake, a sourdough cake that sits on my worktop for 10 days while he bubbles away.

All I have to do is feed him and stir him, then on the 9th day I divide him into 4 and pass him onto 3 friends.

I keep the 4th portion and make him into a cake on the 10th day 🙂

Hopefully Herman will make a nice Cake !
