Walking with the Sheriff..

On Sunday we went to Wansford to meet up with the High Sheriff sheriff2of Cambridgeshire.

He was doing a 10 mile walk in aid of his charity and we went along to support him.

I knew nothing about the High Sheriff, his charity or what his job involves, but thanks to Jane who runs the charity I now know a  little more about it all..

This is what she had to say…….

As you may know, High Sheriffs are appointed each year in the counties of England and Wales. The Office of High Sheriff is at least 1,000 years old, having its roots in Saxon times, before the Norman Conquest.  High Sheriffs are responsible for duties conferred by the Crown, including attendance at Royal visits to the county and the protection of Her Majesty’s High Court Judges when on Circuit in the county. a personal responsibility for fundraising throughout their year in office.  The money raised is used in the High Sheriff’s Award Scheme.  The High Sheriff’s Award Scheme was set up in Cambridgeshire over 10 years ago to recognise achievement and give grants to projesheriffcts which enable young people to make a positive contribution to their communities.

In addition to their official duties, High Sheriffs take on

The current High Sheriff (Colonel Peter Horrell) who you met today, decided to raise money for the High Sheriff Award Scheme by undertaking a sponsored walk – which you took part in today!.  The training Peter undertook was part of his recovery to full health following the donation of a kidney in early July 2007.

My charity, Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, manages the High Sheriff’s Award Scheme – background on CCF is on website  –  www.cambscf.org.uk

There was 10 of us altogether and the walk took us from Wansford into  Peterborough Cathedral  ,we walked along the Nene river which was very nice.

The High Sheriff’s mother provided us with much welcome coffee and biscuits at the half way mark.

A very enjoyable walk with some very interesting people and the Sheriff kept up a fast pace for some one recovering from a kidney donation.

Books galore

Today we went to the yearly warehouse book sale at Galloway and Porter  in Cambridgephoto

I was amazed , there was thousands of books and all only £1 each.

It was easy to spend your money if you like books,I came away with 10 books costing me £10 which was less than just one of the books would have been in the shops

So 9 great Christmas gifts and a book for me too.

As lady M loves books she would have been in heaven.

Catch of the day

This caught my eye in the newspaper today.
Its believed to be the largest thresher shark ever caught in the world.
It was caught by mistake while fishing for squid and took a fork lift truck to carry it to Newlyn fish market in Cornwall, where it sold for a mere £225 thats just 20p a pound.

Here’s how you might cook it…..

4 shark steaks
bunch of water cress
one onion
8floz of dry white wine
2floz olive oil
juice of two lemons
3tbsps grated ginger
2tblsp balsamic vinegar

chop the onion and water cress and mix well with the remaining ingredients.
pour the marinade over the steaks and leave for between 2 and 24 hours in the fridge.
remove steaks and place under a grill for 4 to 5 mins each side.
serve with rice…

Nice day for a walk

After all the rain yesterday, I woke to a glorious sunny day, so Geoff came over on the train and we set off for the coast.coast today 002

We stopped at Wolferton and hoped  to get down to the sea defense wall,as you may remember we had a bit of trouble last time.

This time we sneaked our way down and along the coast into Snettisham, not disturbing one bird on our way 🙂

We stopped off for tea and cake at Snettisham village, where we realized that we were running out of walking time.

So we finished the last part off by bus……
