Day 7 refuge de Manganu to refuge de Petra-Piana

Saturday 23/06/07

Set off today at 5.53am as usual we started off with a very long never ending Ascent up to the highest point on the GR20, the Breche de Capitellu, at 2225mGR20 137.

It took us 2 hours of walking to reach this point and the views were magnificent, especially of the 2 beautiful lakes.

The path down to the Refuge was very steep and stony, full of alder scrub and wet under foot in places.

It was a difficult walking day again today involving a lot of climbing scrambling and bouldering.

I found it both mentally and physically very hard.. Geoff raced ahead of me all day today which did not help.

I have now been walking for 7 days the longest I have ever done in one stretch and over the most difficult terrain as well. GR20 148

Looking back we decided we should not have come down to the refuge but we should have carried on and done stage 8 today as well.

The refuge at Petra- Piana is a small one and sits on a small base held down with cables. It rocks if its windy…. which it did so I am told… people even screamed but I just carried on sleeping…

Wicken fen…..

Yesterday I spent a lovely day with fellow blogger Ellee…..

After setting her phone up so she can now twitter from her mobile and receivewalk 025

twitters to her mobile, we went off on a nice walk, round Wicken fen .

The weather was warm and windy making it a great day for a walk… I love walking in the wind it always makes you feel so fresh and alive….

I also logged her back into Flickr, face book, her stat counter and tried so hard to get her Google reader working but had no luck as we could not get the correct password…

I had a great day and hope next time I visit her she will let me practice my massage techniques out on her

Following Geoff (days 12/13/14)

image

Well Geoff got through the scary bit,”the awesome chemin De la Mature” is how he described it.He then carried on to walk a 17 mile day with 5000ft of ascent and 4000ft of descent, it was so cold at the top that he got his white fingers, but he soon warmed up when he reached Gabas.

The following day he had a vertical climb of nearly a mile not helped by the changing weather a mixture of sunshine and thunderstorms. After walking 16 miles he came to the refuge in Gourette.(which is a ski station)

This morning he left Gourette in awful weather conditions with poor visibility, I presume he is now at Arrens-Marsous.No News from him since this morning but I put that down to the bad weather conditions……Sure we will hear from him tomorrow.

Someone sent me a link today from the Times…. Pyrenees: walkers paradise  a must read…..
